Transport and Climate Research Intern

Overview

The Transport and Climate Intern will start in May 2013 and will work closely with the team supporting research on climate finance in the transport sector and the Low Emissions Development Strategies Global Partnership (LEDS GP) Transport Working Group’s efforts that include capacity building outreach (i.e. webinars, workshops) and supporting policymaking efforts in Peru. The intern will also support EMBARQ and CEP researchers on a variety of research and writing assignments on topics that include co-benefits, policy instruments and financial mechanisms to support sustainable low-carbon transport.

The Transport and Climate Change initiative is a cross-programmatic team with EMBARQ, the sustainable transport and urban development program of the World Resources Institute (WRI), and the Climate and Energy Program (CEP). Therefore the overall objective of the Transport & Climate initiative is to demonstrate that low-carbon transport pathway is doable and produce sustainable/development benefits in order to mobilize the reduction potential of emissions from transport in urban cities.

Responsibilities

The intern will gain experience in the following areas:

Research and Data Analysis (60%):

  • Assisting with research and data analysis on topics related to sustainable low-carbon transport definition and financial mechanisms, Monitoring Reporting Verification (MRV) framework and principles that could be established to track these commitments, and mechanism to leverage the multilateral development banks (MDBs) commitment with private finance
  • Collecting and analyzing information; and monitoring and analyzing relevant material from conferences and seminars, academic journals, and reporting from a wide variety of sources, including NGOs.
  • Planning and executing quantitative data analysis; preparing results to complement published material.
  • Summarizing existing literature and research results for incorporation into research publications, presentations, and briefing memos.
  • Working collaboratively with research staff to develop and complete writing assignments. Completing assignments while identifying gaps as well as questions, and in accordance with deadlines.
  • Contributing additional resources to the LEDS Transport Toolkit.
  • Researching on the legal framework to mainstream climate change in Peruvian policymaking and budgeting.

Outreach (20%):

  • Maintaining relationships with external partners on related research and action.
  • Maintaining relations with internal partners
  • Assist with preparing outreach presentations
  • Contributes blog posts about transport and climate to EMBARQ’s TheCityFix Blog and WRI’s Insight’s Blog.

Administrative (20%):

  • Coordinating the monthly meeting of the Practice Area Network (PAN)
  • Providing general administrative support to include word processing, copying, etc.
  • Supporting project development and proposal writing
  • Maintaining a master calendar of project milestones that include relevant conferences, research and publications, and other related events.

Qualifications

  • Degree: Bachelor’s degree in economics, finance, public policy, or other related field
  • Degree preferred: Master’s Degree

Project Coordinator II/ Research Analyst I

Overview

The Project Coordinator will provide project management, operations and administration, communications, fundraising, and research support to the Health & Road Safety Program within EMBARQ. The Health and Road Safety team supports and manages all public health and road safety projects across EMBARQ’s global network of centers for sustainable transport in Mexico, Brazil, Turkey, India and China. The Project Coordinator will support the administration and reporting of major EMBARQ grants, as well as play a key role working with the Project Manager in coordinating projects and evaluating performance. This position will also support research and data collection for various projects and publications, working to promote the connections between traffic safety and sustainable transport and urban development, as well as research and write reports on accomplishments and other items to donors.

Responsibilities

Project Management, Fundraising, Communications, and Administration (70%)

  • Coordinate and help manage project financials, including: preparing project/proposal budgets, reviewing expenses, processing contracts/payment requests, and tracking financials.
  • Serve as primary budget coordinator for large grant across the EMBARQ network.
  • Maintain, monitor, and revise the accounting/reporting with project manager and others in WRI.
  • Comply with internal WRI financial reporting, budgeting and contract processes, and deadlines.
  • Monitor contracts and process payment requests for subgrants and other agreements.
  • Work closely with manager and project team to write grant proposals and prepare budgets.
  • Organize meetings, workshops, and other events, help document events and follow up.
  • Serve as a point of contact for internal and external requests for information. Support outreach and communications efforts with EMBARQ communications staff and External Relations.
  • Contribute to EMBARQ and WRI media releases such as blog posts or newsletters.

Research (30%)

  • Write and coordinate with EMBARQ network on donor reporting narratives/outcomes.
  • Perform research and data collection for Health and Road Safety projects and publications.
  • Support research projects on health, transportation and urban development in global context.
  • Participate in publication writing, proofreading, editing, and contact with external relations.
  • Present on projects and objectives internally and externally.
  • Help identify new areas or topics which would contribute to the project’s objectives and profile-raising.

Qualifications

  • Undergraduate degree, Master’s degree preferred, in accounting, business, public administration, environmental studies, urban planning transportation or a related field.
  • 1-2 years of full time experience in an office environment.
  • Strong interest in program/project management and administration.
  • Experience with, or demonstrated aptitude for, financial management, event planning, fundraising and communications.
  • Understanding of non-profit accounting, experience with managing grants and contracts.
  • Knowledge or experience in sustainable transport, urban planning, or a related field is helpful.
  • Strong analytical capabilities and a high level of organization and attention to detail.
  • Demonstrated capacity to work under pressure and successfully manage multiple deadlines.
  • Experience working in a large, international network where cross-cultural communication is key.
  • Proficient with MS Excel, MS Word, and MS PowerPoint, plus for skills in Adobe programs.

Associate, Research and Practice (Bangalore)

Summary

EMBARQ, the World Resources Institute’s program for sustainable transport and urban development, is seeking an Associate for its Research and Practice group (R&P) in India. The successful candidate will be based in Bangalore and will report to the Strategy Head - Research and Practice, while working closely with team members in other groups (Integrated Transport, Urban Development and Accessibility, Energy and Climate). With strong research and analytical skills, writing and communication skills, and interest in transport, energy, economic development, and urban planning issues, the Associate is expected to work independently to contribute to research activities and deliver publications.

Major Responsibilities

  • Under supervision of the Strategy Head, undertake research and analysis across EMBARQ’s and WRI’s program areas involving the fields of transport, urban planning, climate change, economics and energy issues.
  • Participate actively in EMBARQ and WRI India’s ambitious and innovative growth strategy, by pursuing challenging and new areas of research and disseminating results widely.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with key research organizations and universities throughout India and internationally, to expand EMBARQ’s and WRI’s research influence in India.
  • Organize, facilitate and/or attend workshops and similar events that are relevant to ongoing research efforts at EMBARQ and WRI India.

Associate, Strategy and Management

Overview

EMBARQ seeks an Associate to provide research, writing and communication support to the EMBARQ Director. This position would be part of EMBARQ’s Strategy and Management team, which provides strategic leadership on sustainable transport and urban development, and supports EMBARQ’s global network of centers for sustainable transport in Mexico, Brazil, Turkey, India and China.

Responsibilities

The Associate will support the EMBARQ Director in developing content for internal and external communications, completing research, coordinating engagement with partners and contributing to strategic management and logistics. His/her main areas of responsibility will include approximately:

30% Strategic communications

  • Conceptualize and develop written and graphic content for reports and presentations summarizing EMBARQ strategy, projects and global sustainable transport trends and opportunities;
  • In collaboration with EMBARQ Marketing & Communications and program directors, define and clarify; concepts and language for external communications.

30% Research

  • Research and document emerging trends and best practices in urban transport, city planning and environmental sustainability;
  • Support scoping sustainable transport and urban development opportunities;
  • Contribute research and analysis to global research activities and special projects as needed.

20% Development & Fundraising

  • Develop written background content or analysis for funding proposals and concept notes;

Responsibilities

  • Manage implementation of on-going Urban Transport projects in Bangalore, with an emphasis on Bus-based Public Transport and BRTS projects.
  • Participate actively in EMBARQ and WRI India’s ambitious and innovative growth strategy by identifying and pursuing new project ideas, with existing as well as new partners.
  • Build and maintain strong network and relationships with key partners, institutions, stakeholders and colleagues throughout India and abroad.
