• The Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality has an ambitious target: to have 1,000 km (620 miles) of bikeways by 2023. The municipality has at least one strong ally in this goal: EMBARQ Turkey has been helping to improve cycling infrastructure across the country, and has already been a key supporter of Istanbul’s efforts.

  • As India’s public bus companies work to stay afloat amidst rising gas prices and shrinking budgets, EMBARQ India is helping. From June 7th-10th, EMBARQ India conducted a series of two-day workshops, one for BEST (Mumbai’s City Bus Service Provider) and one for NMMT (Navi Mumbai Bus Service Provider), aimed at teaching bus drivers how to drive more safely and more efficiently. By working together, EMBARQ India and Mumbai’s bus companies are improving both the safety of bus operations and the fuel efficiency of the vehicles.

  • The Mexican National Development Plan unveiled May 21st, lays out a framework for the development of Mexico’s cities over the next six years. President Enrique Peña Nieto called the plan “a road map,” which will guide Mexico’s development from 2013 through 2018. President Peña Nieto wrote on the administration’s blog “it is a plan to make substantial changes.

  • Sudhir Gota’s research will focus on the current ASIF framework in Asia, or “activity, “mode share,” “intensity,” and “fuel mix,” and its usage to determine what existing parameters could be causing a high fluctuation in results. In doing so, the ASIF usage can become more credible and consistent. This framework was initially developed by Schipper himself and created a way to understand the different components of transport energy use in order to calculate emissions.

  • Over the past six months, Mexico has demonstrated a renewed focus on urban policies. The newly elected Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI) government, which came into power in December 2012, has created a new Department known as SEDATU (Secretaría de Reforma Agraría, Desarrollo Territorial y Urbano) – Department for Agrarian Reform, Territorial and Urban Development – which focuses on planning and sustainability.
